#10 is a quare bit heavier than we usually have going here at imprint and it features the fantastic Gacys Threads in session. If you don’t know these guys, well, you are in for a treat. They play fantastically aggressive metal-core tainted with lots of influences; if you are a fan of heavy music you will enjoy this one immensely.

I was hoking through my file system lately and I came across a plethora of old radio shows, mixes and podcasts I had put together over the last few years and I thought I’d re-upload a bunch of them so that you guys could have a listen. Some of them are complete gems especially the Boxcutter one which is just a random, eclectic wander through his vinyl collection, with not a dubstep tune in sight. All artist names are download links below… check them out… some brilliant stuff.

Boxcutter - A random wander through Barry’s record collection.

DJ Nez - A vinyl mix performed live.

Princekong - A fucking insane ableton mix.

BEW - Early pre-recorded BEW session - this is all completely original, and unheard stuff - the reason Barry is one of Belfast’s best producers.

BEW - Live mix again showing why Barry blows minds continuously.

G-BO - A pre-recorded pumping vinyl mix by little performed DJ G-Bo

Iso9 and Deadman - Two mixes from local stalwarts Paul and Jasey

RL/VL - Back from the days before Space Dimension Controller was an international superstar, Jack Hamill made the most amazing ambient music - this contains a track composed especially for The Attic, complete with Pingu Noises. Lush.

RL/VL - Another live set/mix from RL/VL - this ones cracker too with some more beats involved.

T-Polar - A seriously lush mix from T-Polar, insanely good this one.

Rap and Hip-Hop music are genres that pick up mixed reactions from music fans. Scratch the surface and one will be presented with a pretty fickle, image conscious bag of drivel that represents music in the loosest of senses and in a way Rap and Hip-Hop in the mainstream are like most other genre’s; derivative and a wee bit shite.

Like any other genre though, allow yourself to be sucked a little deeper and you may be surprised by what pops up to greet you. In my opinion, throughout Rap and Hip-Hop’s eventful history there has been some fantastic and awe-inspiring music projected upon the world. Listening to Public Enemies “It Takes a Nation of Millions…” reflects perfectly the raw power and sheer stamina that Rap and Hip Hop can create and it only takes a quick glance at the genre’s history and birth in the rundown streets of the Bronx to get an idea of the expression it allows.

Well, getting past the genre dissection, I always enjoy finding subcultures in music that interest me and one such subculture is the existence of ‘Chopped and Screwed’ music. ‘Chopped and Screwed’ refers to a form of remixing that takes place within the hip hop music scene and it was developed and popularised mainly by the Houston scene in the early 90s. The technique is mainly accomplished by slowing the tempo of records down to between 60 - 70 quarter-note beats per minute and applying strange techniques such as skipping beats, record scratching, stop-time, and musical treatment to make a sort of ‘chopped-up’ version of an original track.

When I first read about this I was immediately intrigued and the first thing that popped into my head was, “Man, theres bound to be some serious drug use at play here” … well … turns out there is quite a bit actually. The entire ‘Chopped and Screwed’ concept seems to have been built around the use of something known as ‘Syrup’ (Sizzurp, Purple Drank, Texas Tea… trust me I could go on). If you haven’t worked it out yet, this is basically a prescription-strength cough syrup containing codeine and promethazine and in a basic sense it slows the brain down, thus seemingly, the reason it inspired the ‘Chopped and Screwed’ genre.

The pioneer of this genre is known to be a guy who went by the moniker ‘DJ Screw’. DJ Screw fronted the ‘Screwed up Click’ and he is widely considered to be the pioneer of this genre, sometimes referred to as simply ‘Screwed Music’. Sadly, DJ Screw died in November 2000 from…. well… an overdose of codeine.

Throughout the 90’s in Houston’s ghetto area’s, such as South Park, there was a major upsurge in the use of codeine based ’syrup’ and in a somewhat strange correlation, these areas seen a huge increase in the popularity and production frequency of this so-called ‘Screwed Music’ and labels and crews like ‘Swishahouse’ and ‘South Park Coalition’ began to come together. These crews actually epitomised the ethos of Punk music in a way and renounced the intervention of corporations and record labels, choosing instead to deal in casettes and CD’s from the trunks of their tricked out cars, selling hand painted t-shirts and putting out maybe 40 records a year.

Albeit, the genre was most definately a subset of American style, so-called, ‘Gangsta Rap’ and most of the music did have this distinct feel to it. With the proliferation today in alternative scenes of new, more intelligent styles of rapping such as those seen on labels like Anticon and with artists like Dan le Sac, its hard to sometimes give a genre like this attention. This being said, for me its an extremely interesting and fresh new listen thats great for a little chill out.

I’ve linked a few mixes by DJ Screw at the bottom to give you an idea of what we’ve been talking about - its worth a listen whatever your stance on recreational drugs. Its like Mr Hicks said, drugs have done some great things for the music we love today.

So I conned my mother into picking up some ingredients at the supermarket and we set about making some Monster Cookies. I thought I’d share this recipe with the world… but be warned, these things are in no way good for you.

Ingredients (makes 20-25 cookies)
100g butter
190g caster sugar
190g + 2 tablespoons firmly packed brown sugar
3 eggs
400g peanut butter
3/4 teaspoon glucose syrup
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
675g regular oats, uncooked
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
150g regular m&m’s
150g choc chips

First off, cream the butter…

Gradually add the sugar (yeah, I know this seems like a LOT of sugar) and beat the mixture well. Add beaten eggs, peanut butter, syrup and vanilla. Beat this well until it looks like it does below.

Add oats (again, yes, really this many), soda and salt. At this point you are probably thinking, holy shit this mixture is stiff. This is how it should be.

I also HIGHLY RECOMMEND eating some of this dough now as it tastes godlike.

Stir in the remainder of the ingredients. Its pretty hard to mix the chocolate and m&m’s in well but try hard because you need to be careful that you don’t end up with loads of these at the bottom of the bowl at the end.

If you have one, use a little 50g measure to drop the cookie dough onto cookie sheets or baking trays. We just used our hands because we are awesome. Lightly press the dough into 3.5 inch circles. We made ours a little bigger but this is up to you…

Bake these at about 165degC (150 for fan ovens) for about 12 mins although you might wanna check them at 10. The centre should still be a little soft. Cool these for a minute or two on the trays and then transfer to wire racks (if you have them) and cool them completely.

Suffice to say, the podcast will probably take a break as I have no access to the production equipment… maybe I’ll convince some friends to step in while I am gone…? I’ll see…

Anywho - just explaining the possible upcoming absence…

Love - matt

I’ve been receiving somewhat strange and unknown transmissions as of late to my email address claiming no more than “always nic3 to contr1bute”… seems like lyrics or poetry, I’m not sure…

I’ll write them here….

Tainted Rose

-

The light fades, it burns

Darkness and suffering disappear
The angel and her wings
Winging it quickly from the fear
Look into the sky
I feel the hurt, I see the pain
A tainted rose
Shining once again
A second chance, take it
Your fear of heaven and your heart wont break it
So much to see, so much to fear
Run away, your heart might hear
The truths a black thing
Bigger than us all
Picks us up to throw us further
Throw us further when we fall
A tainted rose, stronger than before
It was my love that made it grow some more
It was my love that made it fade away
But that’s a story for another day
